I’ve read good things about this grammar. It seems like an approachable reference work:

“Un tentativo di presentare le strutture morfologiche e sintattiche nella prospettiva della linguistica scientifica moderna. Scopo di questa grammatica, oltre a quello descrittivo, è di fare da ponte tra la visione scientifica dei fatti linguistici e l’insegnamento nell’università e nella scuola. ”La “Grammatica di riferimento dell’italiano contemporaneo” si presenta come una sintesi dei risultati più avanzati ottenuti dalla ricerca linguistica italiana nel campo della produzione di grammatiche scientifiche, di grammatiche scolastiche e di grammatiche per stranieri: intende descrivere le strutture grammaticali e sintattiche dell’italiano attuale in modo completo e scientificamente rigoroso, e al tempo stesso chiaro e accessibile a tutti. Le nozioni teoriche sono ridotte al minimo indispensabile e i termini tecnici sono quasi del tutto abbandonati; delle partizioni tradizionali si conservano solo quelle realmente utili nella pratica dell’italiano parlato e scritto. In fondo all’opera, un capitolo che raccoglie 80 schede di sintassi recupera, per il lettore meno aperto alle novità, le nozioni tradizionali di sintassi della frase e del periodo (soggetto, predicato, complemento, proposizione principale, tipi di proposizioni subordinate ecc.), mentre un ricco e particolareggiato indice analitico consente di individuare tutti gli argomenti trattati. Infine, un capitolo illustra come si costruiscono oltre 1 600 verbi italiani, da abbandonare a zoppicare. Consultando la lista delle reggenze il lettore assume che si può “adempiere il proprio dovere” ma anche “adempiere al proprio dovere”; che è possibile “allearsi a qualcuno” ma anche “allearsi con qualcuno”; che una certa pratica può “afferire all’ufficio reclami” mentre non può “afferire l’ufficio reclami”, e così via.”

I don’t know if the books are any good, but they are current, they generally get 4 or 5 star ratings, and several have been bestsellers in Italy so at least they are hitting some kind of nerve. They all seem to be part of something called the New Italian Epic, whatever that is (sounds interesting on paper …)

1) Italian courses from Wellesley via the edX.org platform. It’s free and there’s no commitment to sign up for a course - you can do as much or as little of it as you want. I did one course and was really impressed with how good it was.
2) EfficaceMente This site hosts hundreds of articles about personal growth topics. I find them to be ideal for an intermediate/advanced Italian learner because they are written in an informal way combining colloquial language with some higher level/less frequent vocabulary. The website has been revamped since I used it last and now for a 10 Euro/month membership subscribers have access to audio podcasts of the articles, so it’s effectively audio+text.
3) Podcast Italiano Free podcast episodes available through iTunes, Spotify, and his website. He also has a Youtube channel with videos. He has a range of episodes for complete beginners, intermediate, and advance Italian learners. The beginner and intermediate episodes have transcripts available on his website for free. If you pay a small monthly fee on patreon, you can access transcripts for the advanced podcast episodes. I really enjoy his banter with his friend, Erika, and he has some interesting interviews.
4) Italy Made Easy There is a wealth of useful videos for beginner and intermediate learners. I used this site a lot early on.
5) Veleno Podcast Serial: This is 7 episodes produced by an Italian journalist who investigated in depth a true event that happened 20 years ago involving mass hysteria over satanism and child abuse. It consists of narration and interviews with the people involved. It is really intense and very gripping. Free on iTunes. Transcripts for all 7 episodes are available here
6) Equilibrio Digitale This podcast series contains only 4 episodes, which is a shame because it’s great. The narrator speaks very clearly. The topic is about problems with living in a digital age and how to counteract issues like being addicted to a smartphone. There’s no transcript. It’s free to listen to through this website, or to download through iTunes.
7) Wired This is the Italian version of Wired; lots of interesting articles

9) wikiHow This is the Italian version of wikiHow. Read how-to articles in Italian about anything…Examples of things I’ve read about are: How to train a dog, How to survive in the woods, How to get rid of a wasps’ nest.
10) National Geographic Italia This is the Italian version of National Geographic. Lots of interesting articles
11) Quora This is the Italian version of Quora. I’ve used it in the past as a place to post answers to questions in Italian (to motivate me to write more); so it’s a good place to be interactive. 12) Iceberg Project. The person who hosts the site offers a paid course (which I haven’t tried) but there is wealth of free resources on the site. I’ve found many of the articles really interesting and educational. For example, Parole Pericolose: 5 Embarrassing Words You May Be Saying in Italian an article explaining Italian text/SMS shortcuts. I periodically return to this site, there’s always something interesting about Italian to read there.
13) EuroNews This is a news website but the really cool thing is that in the top left corner you can choose to read the articles in Italian (or 17 other languages) so it’s great to use for parallel texts. Even if you don’t want to use it that way, you can easily toggle between languages if an article is a little too tough.
14) Italian-English Parallel Texts This site is pretty awesome for anyone who is really into literature - it’s a collection of famous English and Italian novels set up to read as parallel texts. You can search by great Italian, English, American, or Canadian writers.
15) L’italiano secondo il «metodo natura» This site allows you to download this book for free. I checked online to confirm that it’s a public domain book. It’s basically a graded reader that teaches Italian through stories that get progressively more complex. (It’s also available in Spanish and German on this site).
16) ECL Sample Exams (with answer keys) There are sample exams for 15 languages (obviously including Italian) at the A2, B1, B2, and C1 levels. Hosted by the European Consortium for the Certificate of Attainment in Modern Languages. 17) Il Giornalino di Gian Burrasca This is a public domain book (with pictures) written in the form of a diary of a young boy. Reminiscent of Le Petit Nicolas.
